Collation 1 of the Great Stemma

Notes

The Paris scholar Yolanta Zaluska says she collated the texts of a majority of the Great Stemma manuscripts in the mid-1980s. To the best of my knowledge, that summary has never been published. Bonifatius Fischer's Vetus Latina Genesis appeared in 1954 and contains a critical text of some of the first half of the stemma. This is based on four witnesses only and suppresses all of the uncanonical material.

Piggin.Net presents here a collation from the principal intact manuscripts of the six main recensions of the Great Stemma— the Plutei Codex, the San Juan Bible (* marks fill-ins from the Urgell Beatus), the San Millán de la Cogolla Bible, the Roda Codex, the Facundus Beatus and the Ripoll Bible (BAV, Vat. lat. 5729). The Sigma and Iota recensions have not been collated as the evidence indicates they are of late dates and contribute nothing in establishing the ur-text.

Each cell here generally represents a single roundel in its manuscript, although there are many singular cases where a manuscript has failed to properly enclose a section of text. In some instances I have divided a longer text found in a single roundel into multiple cells of the tabulation.

Cells in the transcription which represent gaps in a single manuscript as compared to its counterparts are marked "[omitted]". Where medieval and latter-day biblical scholars expected to find a name, but it is not found in any of the five manuscripts, the row is marked: "[lacuna]".

The transcription has been divided into four parts, headed Collation 1, 2, 3, 4, to make it easier for the user to navigate in. The first section (below) contains only the genealogy of Christ and the royal history of Judah. Collation 2 contains other genealogies including those of the Horrites, Moses and King Saul. Collation 3 assembles the timeline data. Although the chronographic material is clearly also the work of the Great Stemma's author, it accompanies the stemmatic structure but has its own separate purpose.

Finally there is a separate page, Collation 4, containing the bulkier interpolations. Short interpolations, for example dealing with Put and his connection to the River of Mauretania (line 78), are simply inserted below beneath the relevant names. A great many such interpolations are found in the Alpha and Beta recensions.

After studying this page, the reader may well agree with me that the leftmost columns are likely to be closer to the most primitive text and the rightmost ones to represent the more corrupted texts.

A transcription is an arduous, dull and error-prone task that never seems to be complete. This one is certainly not complete. If any reader feels inclined to pinpoint errors, detect mismatches or suggest better translations, the author will be grateful. You can read most of these manuscripts in the original, thanks to high-resolution images on the internet (list). My working datasheet can be downloaded as a semicolon separated values file if you wish to continue or modify my work.

Especial thanks are due to Seumas Macdonald, who undertook the more difficult translations. Any errors are entirely my own. Latin words on this page can be instantly looked up by using the Alpheios.org Latin translation add-in for the Mozilla Firefox browser.

The columns at right represent Piggin.Net index numbers, English translations and notes. This portal also contains a complete text of the Liber Genealogus.

Emmanuel, nobiscum Deus [omitted] Maria genuit Christum [omitted] [omitted] [omitted] 393 Emmanuel! meaning God with us The formula "nobiscum Deus" was found in both the Vetus Latina and Vulgate: see Tertullian, Adversus Iudaeos 10.1. Ac's "Mary fathered Christ" is absurd and must be a late addition to cure a perceived loose end.
Thus it is clear that these two are biologically descended from a single tribe, leading down to Christ, so that what was written might be fulfilled, "Behold, the lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David, has prevailed," whereby the lion is Solomon, the root is Nathan.
